TREATMENTS

HEPATITIS A

Hepatitis A is usually not treated. Bed rest may be recommended if symptoms cause great discomfort. If you have vomiting or diarrhea, you will put on a special diet, created by your doctor to prevent dehydration or malnutrition. Vaccination can also prevent infection with hepatitis A, helping your body to produce antibodies that fight this type of infection.

HEPATITIS B

Acute hepatitis B does not require special treatment. Chronic hepatitis B is treated with antiviral drugs. This form of treatment can be expensive because it has to follow in a few months or years. Treatment of chronic hepatitis B also requires regular medical checkups and monitoring to determine whether the virus progresses.

HEPATITIS C

Antiviral drugs are used to treat acute and chronic hepatitis C. People who develop chronic hepatitis C is usually treated with a combination of antiviral drug therapy. They may also need further tests to determine the best form of treatment. People who develop cirrhosis ( scarring of the liver ), liver disease, or resulting from chronic hepatitis C may be candidates for liver transplantation.

HEPATITIS D

Hepatitis D is treated with medication called alpha interferon.

HEPATITIS E

There currently is no specific medical treatment for hepatitis E. Since the infection is often severe, it usually resolves on its own. People with this type of infection are often advised to get adequate rest, drink plenty of fluids, get enough nutrients, and avoid alcohol.
